The rates
| Company | Rate |
|---|---|
| Most companies | 15% |
| Utility, energy and fuel suppliers | 20% |
| Companies abusing a dominant market position | 20% |
The standard rate rose from 12.5% to 15% from 1 July 2024. Where an accounting period straddles that date, the higher rate applies to the months on or after it.
What is taxed
Gibraltar taxes companies on a territorial basis. Profits are taxable where they are accrued in or derived from Gibraltar, which turns on where the activities that generate the profit take place. Working out the source of income is often the most important question for a Gibraltar company with customers or operations elsewhere.
Payments on account
Companies pay tax during the year in two payments on account, each normally half of the company’s tax for the previous period. Any balance is settled when the return is filed.
| Payment | Due |
|---|---|
| First payment on account | 28 February |
| Second payment on account | 30 September |
| Return and any balance | Nine months after the end of the month the period ends |
The Corporate Tax Return
The CT1 return is filed with the Income Tax Office together with the company’s accounts. A 31 December year-end, for example, gives a deadline of 30 September.
Gibraltar has no VAT, so the corporate tax return, payroll and the Companies House annual return are the main recurring filings.
